Biography of Laura Vandervoort

Laura Dianne Vandervoort was born September 22, 1984 in Toronto, Canada. She contracted Meningitis at the age of 6 weeks old and was hospitalized for 3 weeks, but she fought through it. After that she never stopped fighting.
Laura is the granddaughter of Fred Sanger, a local hockey legend from Grand Falls-Windsor who went on to play Junior 'A' hockey with the Quebec Citadelles.

A tomboy for years to come in her childhood, Laura was drawn to athletics, studying martial arts and playing on several school sports teams: soccer, karate (second- degree black belt), basketball, tennis, gymnastics, and baseball.

Laura admired Meryl Streep growing up. The grace of Grace Kelly, the off the wall twist of Tim Burton, the ever so compelling Gordon Pinsent and without question, Dustin Hoffman. She began acting at the age of 13 but had always been an entertainer, putting on shows for family and friends. She always had an odd dark side to her love of film, admiring films like ‘Death Becomes Her, ‘Edward Scissor Hands,’ ‘The Corpse Bride,’ ‘Rear Window,’ and the series ‘The Twilight Zone’. However what triggered her interest in the arts was a film called “My Girl.” She received the movie from her aunt at a very young age and after watching realized that acting was what was inside her, and this became her focus.

After taking several classes and doing background work on Canadian shows such as “Road to Avonlea” and “Harriet the Spy” she got her first speaking role in Canadian children’s series “Goosebumps” (3 Episodes) and “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”.

After commercials and guest stars (Mutant-X, Prom Queen, Twice in a Lifetime, Doc, Sue Thomas FBI, Troubled Waters, Dresdan Files) and a few Disney movies of the week (“Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire” & “Alley Cats Strike”). 

At nineteen, while attending York University under the concentration of Psychology and English, Laura landed the lead role of “Sadie Harrison” on the CTV TV series “Instant Star,” a popular series that ran for four seasons.

In 2006 Laura shot her first feature titled “The Lookout” with Jeff Daniels, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mathew Goode and Isla Fisher. It was the directorial debut of screenwriter Scott Frank. Several other TV appearances such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” led Laura into the hands of the CW network. Landing the coveted role of “Supergirl” or “Kara” on the hit CW series “Smallville,” Laura became the main focus of the 7th season.

Following the CW and Smallville, Laura then shot the sequel to the feature film “Into The Blue” titled “Into the Blue 2: The Reef.” This film starred Laura alongside Chris Carmack (The O.C) and Marsha Thomason (Lost).

Following “The Reef,” Laura went directly into filming an independent production titled “The Jazzman,” which also starred Canadians stars Michael Ironside and Corey Sevier.

Laura has since moved onto shoot the TV movie titled “Out of Control,” where she plays a forensic scientist solving a mysterious murder all while falling in love unknowingly for the killer himself.

Following this film, Laura shot a gritty independent film called “Damage.” Starring Walton Goggins (The Shield) and Steve Austin. This film depicts the dirty world of underground illegal fighting. Laura, then turned brunette, played Frankie, a woman once owned and sexually abused by a wealthy mobster. After Frankie tries to commit suicide she is then sold and works the underground fight scene with ex-convict John (Played by Steve Austin).

Since Damage, Laura shot a Sci-fi miniseries, a SyFy channel’s relaunching of Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld. The new TV series stars Tohmoh Pinikett (of Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse) as war journalist Matt Ellman, who dies while on his honeymoon with his wife Jessie (Laura) and wakes up in the titular Riverworld, a mysterious planet where every person who has ever lived on Earth is brought after their death. The premise of the show will have Matt trying to find Jessie, while at the same time uncovering the truth behind Riverworld.

While shooting Riverworld, Laura shot the pilot for ABC’s new TV series “V with stars as Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) and Scott Wolf (Party of Five.) in which Laura plays the role of the princess of ‘visitors’. The series ends after only 2 seasons remaining unfinished.

After “V” Laura shot four feature films. The psychological thriller, “The Entitled’ starring herself, Dustin Milligan and Ray Liotta followed by McG’s romantic comedy, ‘This Means War’ starring Resse Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. ABC then asked Laura to be their lead in a romantic Christmas story called ‘Desperately Seeking Santa’.

Laura then continued on her superhero path by voicing “Mary Jane” in the new Spiderman video game. He lent also her voice for two characters in two episodes of "Family Guy".

Laura wrapped up the comedy, ‘Ted’ directed by Seth Macfarlane, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, set to premiere in June 2012 and she has then starred in the TV Movie of Canadian production, "Broken Trust", released always in june 2012.
Laura appeared also as a guest star in the episode 4 from title "Parting Shots"
of the fourth season of tv series "White Collar".


Finally will appear in final episodes (12 and 13) of the third season of tv series "Haven", in the christmas tv movie "Finding Mrs.Clause" and an episode of the serie "CSI:NY".

Between a cinematographic work and the other, she realizes many photoshoots for various companies and magazines and she devotes to the social (to example she has posed for Peta campaign).

She is also venturing into new territory writing a children’s book series for young girls between the ages of 7-12.

In her spare time, Laura enjoys working out, writing, photography, cooking, reading and antique shopping. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.

Has been revealed exclusively at Toronto Comic Con (March 2013), Laura Vandervoort is set to star in upcoming "Space" original drama "BITTEN". The series is based on the novels by Canadian author Kelley Armstrong, and Laura is going to be the perfect Elena (the main character). BITTEN is set to begin production in Toronto in the next months, the first season will be made up 13 episodes.

Laura joined the cast of the animated Canadian web series Captain Canuck, lending her voice to the mysterious master of disguise "Blue Fox and more... Laura is being featured on the cover of REAL STYLE magazine summer 2013.

In 2014 Laura is featured on cover of Fashion Faces, Next Big Thing Magazine and Maxim Issue. She has just finished filming a romantic comedy titled "Coffee Shop".
